How does a German online shoe store grab some attention in the real world? Well, a virtual shoe fitting installation makes sense right? Yep, here it is, the Virtual Shoe Fitting Store from Goertz, an Augmented Reality, Microsoft Kinect powered installation that is plugged into a giant screen, then rolled out as virtual shoe stores at central stations and shopping centres across Germany.

Using 3x Microsoft Kinects, a beefy computer and giant screen, this virtual shoe fitting station is basically an Augmented Reality Shoe Store, tracking 3D versions of their entire range of online shoes to your feet, allowing you to choose your favourite brands, flip through colours, sizes and then post to Facebook for feedback before buying on your mobile via a dynamic QR code that is displayed on screen.

I love the way they’ve been about to create physical ‘virtual’ stores with the full product range. A solid investment, but probably still a fraction of the cost of building real stores! Very cool.

Ikea has added augmented reality to its 2013 catalog with new features that let consumers access films, interactive experience and photo galleries with their smartphones.

As the video above shows, Ikea has been putting out a catalog since 1951. Since then, it has evolved from a print vehicle to (last year) an iPhone, iPad and Android app. Ikea hasn’t yet released an AR app for use with the upcoming catalog, which goes out to some 211 million consumers worldwide. According to Creativity Online, one of the AR features will be “x-ray” vision that gives you a look inside the furniture.

Ikea isn’t the first to employ AR for a catalog — British retailer Tesco launched a catalog last year that let consumers access 3D images of more than 40 products via AR.

The city of Troy, Michigan was facing a budget shortfall, and was considering closing the Troy Public Library for lack of funds. Even though the necessary revenues could be raised through a miniscule tax increase, powerful anti-tax groups in the area were organized against it. A vote was scheduled amongst the city’s residents, to shut the library or accept the tax increase, and Leo Burnett Detroit decided to support the library by creating a reverse psychology campaign. Yard signs began appearing that read: “Vote to Close Troy Library on August 2nd - Book Burning Party on August 5th.” No one wants to be a part of a town that burns books, and the outraged citizens of Troy pushed back against the “idiotic book burners” and ultimately supported the tax increase, thus ensuring the library’s survival.

Sharing your offline experience directly with your online friends.

Renault made it possible. By bringing the world of Facebook into the real world of the AutoRAI 2011. For the Amsterdam Motorshow we’ve created an innovative and real-time social sharing experience. At the largest automotive event of The Netherlands, 250.000 visitors could like Renault cars through a RFID Facebook card.

We placed specially made Facebook pillars in front of the Renault cars. By holding their pass in front of these pillars, a connection was made to their profile and the car was being “shared” on their wall. This way their offline car experience had been shared with their online friends.

At the Renault stand, car fans got a free card. With this pass, visitors were able to login to their Facebook profile. Since the pass held a RFID-microchip which stored their username and password, it automatically became their Facebook connect card. Ready to LIKE one of the Renault cars at the AutoRAI.

Cell phones provide communication from any location via a network of base stations (known as cell towers or antennas).

Information is transmitted from the cell phone to the base station and vice versa via powerful, high-frequency electromagnetic fields. The level of radiation exposure is greatest when close to its source (the cell phone’s antenna) and decreases sharply when further from the phone.

Achtung came up with Volkswagen Das Interland, an addictive casual game where Holland and Germany get to live out their old time rivalry in football through a penalty shoot out. You will be matched with real Germans and Dutchmen in an effort to beat the other country before the match of all matches will be played at the European Football Championship: Holland vs Germany. High flying emotions guaranteed. Beat the Germans before we meet the Germans (and vice versa) sums it all up! The winning country has a chance to win a Volkswagen Up in their nation’s colors.

Superhero Cheesecake is responsible for the interaction design, animation and production of the mobile app and the Facebook app. The mobile app has been built using Adobe Air which made it possible to release the application for Android, iOS and Flash for the desktop version in one go. The game uses a socket server to allow a lot of live concurrent connections making sure everyone has a smooth gaming experience and waiting queues are limited to an absolute minimum.
